Statistics Canada reported Thursday that average weekly earnings for non-farm payroll workers was $1,031, up 1.1% from April and up 3.4% year-over-year.
The average hours worked was little changed either month-over-month or year-over-year.
Administrative and support services led the annual gains across all 10 main sector groups with a 7.5% increase to an average $844 per week but those working in finance and insurance also saw a sizeable 7.2% increase to $1,420.
Saskatchewan workers saw the largest increase in weekly earnings compared to a year earlier with a 5.8% rise to $1,070 as mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction gained along with healthcare and social assistance.
Nine provinces posted year-over-year gains while Newfoundland and Labrador saw little change.
More workers
Compared with April, the number of non-farm payroll employees rose 32,600 in May.
The largest monthly increases were in health care and social assistance, public administration and educational services while employment declined in retail trade, accommodation and food services and construction.
On a year-over-year basis, the number of payroll employees rose by 353,000 (+2.1%)
