Toronto gets first short-term rental conviction

Toronto city’s municipal and licensing department has secured its first conviction of a landlord under short-term rental zoning regulations.

Under an old bylaw, rentals must be for 7 days or more in the North York area of the city but 2391324 Ontario Ltd. pleaded guilty at Toronto East Court in Scarborough of renting a property it owns for 4 nights.

The council says that the use of services such as Airbnb is a growing issue in the city and is considering how the regulations should reflect its proliferation.

In the case of 2391324 Ontario Ltd. sentencing has been delayed until January, thestar.com reports, as the property is being put on the market. The court has various options including a maximum $50,000 fine.
