Nova Scotia realtor warns of disparate property tax rises

Property assessments for commercial buildings in Nova Scotia could be devastating for some businesses according to a local realtor. Giselle Kakamousias of Turner Drake & Partners says that although the average percentage rate of increases appears moderate there is disparity. Speaking to the Chronicle Herald she said that the average increase is 3.4 per cent in Halifax, 1.4 per cent in the province’s southwest, 0.3 per cent in eastern areas and zero in the northwest. However, many properties that are taxed at a higher rate are in some of the poorest parts of the province and 25 per cent of properties that Turner Drake polled were paying double-digit increases. About 1 in 6 apartments is also showing a double digit increase compared to the average 5.9 per cent across Nova Scotia.
