With affordability baring many from the Vancouver housing market, an academic is warning that the conditions could make the city a resort community. Penny Gurstein director of the school of community and regional planning at the University of British Columbia told the Vancouver Sun that there has been a shift in the make-up of her neighbourhood in the city with fewer young families being able to afford to live there. She warns that the situation could lead to a loss of services such as schools if there are not the children to justify them. She believes that if only certain types of people are able to afford to live in Vancouver then it will be detrimental to the city, and its reputation as one of North America’s greenest cities as more people are forced into longer commutes. She is calling for greater incentives to add supply to the market.
