We need a different type of suburb says academic

Housing affordability will not be tackled effectively unless there is a new plan for suburbs. That’s the view of housing expert Avi Friedman, McGill University professor, who says that we’re still using the same model as we were 50 years ago. Speaking about Edmonton specifically, Friedman told The Edmonton Journal that affordability requires density and a solid transport system. He says that building suburbs that make two cars for a family a necessity must be part of the housing affordability solution. He is calling for new neighbourhoods with mainly townhouses, low apartment buildings and narrow streets. He says that planners must “think outside the box” on new communities.
