A condo owner in Regina has called for reform of the city’s bylaws to prevent homes being adversely impacted by new developments. John Labatt spoke to the Leader Post about a proposed building that would have been a little too close for comfort to his home at Windsor Park. He said that “antiquated bylaws of the city, and developers are not paying enough attention to the impact of their buildings relative to neighbouring buildings.” Labatt’s issue was that the rules on how far a new residential development must be from neighbouring homes are ruled by the height of buildings and do not take into account the impact on existing homes in terms of disrupting natural light as well as noise and privacy issues.
The City’s director of development services Louise Folk admitted that there is an issue, which will be looked into during the bylaws review; however with that likely to take years the City is trying to solve some of the issues by working with residents and developers.
